Re-installing IA8

Postby Piet » Thu Mar 31, 2011 1:50 am

My IA8 suddenly started giving a build error because of a problem with ulteriormiastub.exe. I tried all possible solutions from an earlier thread on a similar bug, but without success. The last option I tried was to un-install and re-install (yeah, right). I ran InstallAware_8.exe but one apprently needs a fresh IA XXXX.exe license converter, which I downloaded, but that in turn needs a fresh trial version, which is not available anymore (only v10 listed as far as I could see). IA support sent me a password to try, but that didn't work either. The support response time is too slow (first response 1 day, second response more than a day and counting, probably because of time zones) when having a screaming client on your back, and I'm hoping someone else has solved this re-installation nightmare. Because I do have a legal license, I'll even be happy to run any crack that's out there, if that's what it takes! Hopefully the crack will work for the password protected "InstallAware Themes.7zip" and "InstallAware Automation.7zip" as well?
Pleeease anybody....

Dear Piet,

I apologize for the delay. The reason for this is that I had to contact a whole bunch of people in order to get you the obsolete installer's password..
Please try 'time saver' - thanks!

Thanks a lot Aviv, I understand the problem you had. I'm up and running again except that in the process I've lost the MySQL plug-in without which I cannot even load my current project. I would really appreciate it if someone could post a link from where I can download it anew.
Thanks again

Dear Piet,

What exactly is the name of the plugin you are missing?

Hi Aviv

In my .mia file mMySQLIDE.dll\mMySQLExec.dll is listed after the MySQL scripts that I run during the installation. This plug-in allows me to enter the server, port, user, password, and script to run.

CheckFilename gives the following:
File : mMySQLExec.dll Link ImagePath : %programfiles%\installaware\installaware 7\plug-ins\my sql
MD5 : b0da3ba1ab0cb443c76d392fd953dcb3 - (928768 Bytes)
File : mMySQLIDE.dll Link ImagePath : %programfiles%\installaware\installaware 7\plug-ins\my sql
MD5 : 6f71625b0e7351536757bcb368bb921a - (515584 Bytes)

Also, during an IA custom setup, MySQL is available as a plug-in option - in my case though, the installation can neither find a previously downloaded cache nor download it fresh.

Does this make sense?

Dear Piet,

that makes sense, I am not sure why you are unable to install the plugin though.

I am attaching the plugin dll's from my machine - see if they works for you.

To install it, copy the My SQL folder to the Program Files\InstallAware\InstallAware X\Plug-Ins\ folder.
Also, edit the .reg file in notepad, and change the path to your Program Files\InstallAware\InstallAware X\Plug-Ins\ folder, and if you are running a 32 bit version Windows, change the registry path to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MimarSinan\InstallAware\2.0\Plug-Ins\My SQL].

Please let me know if that helped!

Hi Aviv

It certainly helped - I could now load my project. I have at least three other problems but my home connection is so slow that I can't properly test it. Back in the office on Monday.
1) The password you gave me apparently automatically installs the admin version while my license is for studio. I tried re-installing but never got the choice of which one to install.
2) During installation it mutters something about mMiniStub(?) being missing. (This may be related to my original problem). The installation carries on if I select Ignore.
3) I can only install minimum configuration. When I try to select additional features it cannot load it from either the previously downloaded cache or fresh from the web. The same happens if I post-installation try doing it from Add/Remove. Does this have to do with paths to IA8 not being available anymore?
4) When I try building my project, it stops with an error at "Building manage services plug-in".

I appreciate your tenacity, but I'll have to decide within the next day or so whether I should give it up and try something like NSIS. If it's not too sensitive an issue, your thoughts on converting my rather complex (for me) projects to another package?

Thanks, Piet

Dear Piet,

I apologize for all your issues. They do seem related to the fact that there is a discrepancy between your license and your installed version.

To be honest, IA 8 is outdated. InstallAware 10.10 is by far the best setup authoring tool out there - it allows you to do remarkable things that were simply not possible before. I strongly recommend considering an update to 10.10 - you will be surprised at how cool it is.
Read about it here:

Hi Aviv

I'm finally back to my original problem where at the end of the build process I get the error message:
.
.
Created Windows Installer database
Error during build: Cannot open file "C:\Program Files\InstallAware\InstallAware 8\interop\ulteriormiastub.exe". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

From the Windows explorer I can see that ulteriormiastub.exe was created during the build and has size 0 bytes. Any ideas?
(Btw, I'm sure v10 is good but I cannot afford it at this stage.)

Dear Piet,

Consider cleaning your %temp% folder and restarting your computer.
If that still does not work, please send your project over to support at installaware.com so I could test it here.

Thanks!

Dear Piet,

I generated a new product code for your project (pressing "new" in the Product Code section of the Project Settings) and that fixed the build problem.
Let me know if it works for you as well!

Dear Aviv

Incredibly, yes, it did solve the problem. I have a meeting tomorrow with another developer from my organization who's considering updating her setup software and I just may try and convince her to switch to InstallAware, purely based on your diligence.

Thanks again
